We recently completed an article on the eight best open headphones on the market, so we though it was only fair to devote some attention to closed headphones as well.

As a result of its adaptability, closed-back headphones are likely to be the ideal option for the vast majority of listeners. They can be used in a variety of scenarios where the use of open-back headphones is either impractical or disruptive to others.

In fact, you may read our article on this topic to learn more about the pros and cons of these quite distinct headphone designs.

List of the 12 Best Closed Back Headphones In 2022

1. The SENNHEISER HD820 is the best closed-back mobile headset.

The Sennheiser HD820 is adored by audiophiles, and for good reason. It is a pair of headphones in my personal collection (recently replaced by the Z1R, see below) that sits alongside the open-back HD800s. In terms of how it depicts sound, this offers something notably distinct. I have never heard a pair of headphones with a closed-back sound so detailed and expansive. It is as near to open sounding as this physical factor allows.

It is one of my favorite-looking headphones of all time due to its futuristic style and outstanding construction. It also has a little viewing window through which you can observe the ferocious, dynamic driver.

The sound is extraordinarily detailed, with clarity and transparency evident throughout the frequency spectrum. Possibly most impressive is the 800’s lack of hefty bass response, which is one of the most notable aspects of the 900. This headset can deliver a powerful blow when required, and it does it with texture and depth in addition to the slam and rumble.

Despite the fact that these headphones are nearly ideal, they do have a flaw. It is extraordinarily expensive, therefore you will need large money to participate. If you can afford it, it is difficult to argue against purchasing it.

2. SONY MDR-Z1R

 2. SONY MDR-Z1R

The jaw-dropping MDR-1ZR is Sony’s second headphone to make our list. I currently possess and adore this item. The Z1R is, in the opinion of many, the best possible pair of headphones; it is difficult to disagree.

A few years ago, after dabbling in the high-resolution audio market for some time, Sony shifted its focus to the industry. This has resulted in a robust headphone and IEM lineup that has given audiophile giants like Audeze and Hifiman substantial competition.

The build quality is comparable to that of other premium headphones. The selected materials include carbon fiber, aluminum, and luxurious leather. The feel is worth the price, as it is well-made, sturdy, and long-lasting. They are both aesthetically pleasing and insanely comfy.

The sound is what matters, however, and after hearing them for the first time, I knew these were the headphones for me. Ample detail, excellent tone balance, and deep, forceful bass. The mids are smooth and engaging, providing weight and depth to male singers while highlighting the glitter of feminine vocals. The staging is expansive, and the visual is amazing.

So, what are the disadvantages? You might expect me to say price, but you would be wrong. I believe they are an excellent value for the price when you consider the premium sound quality and top-tier construction. No, the disadvantage is that they are most effective when paired with exceptional sources. It is such a brutally revealing headset that it must be driven properly. 3. MEZE AUDIO 99 CLASSICS

This headset has existed for a number of years, and despite encountering younger competitors, it continues to enjoy tremendous popularity. It has excellent sound quality, a lovely design, and is reasonably priced.

The Meze 99 Classics are headphones with dynamic drivers and big circumaural earcups. Surprisingly lightweight and comfy, they include wooden earcups that hold the big drives. In addition, they offer one of the most attractive styles on the market and are certain to attract attention when placed on the head or desk.

Their well-sealed architecture blocks out a significant amount of external noise. The sound is clean and captivating. It’s entertaining with a strong bassline, but what I appreciate most is the midrange, which is so silky it nearly sounds rich. Because of its laid-back presentation and gently rolled-off treble, this headphone is really simple to listen to. It works well with all genres and is the most flexible item in its price range.

4. The Sivga SV021 is the most affordable pair of closed headphones

The Sivga SV021 is a popular alternative to classic headphones such as the Audio-Technica M50X. Personally, I prefer them to the studio headphones because they are what I consider to be the ideal lightweight travel headphones. They are lightweight, well-constructed, and their closed-back earcups filter out a significant amount of ambient noise.

The styling of these items is also impeccable. The wooden earcups are available in both light and dark hues. The headband and earpads are comprised of some of the softest protein leather I’ve ever encountered. They are quite comfy and have a modest profile.

The tuning is friendly to consumers and audiophiles. It offends very little, and I believe it sounds marginally better than other highly praised portable headphones at its MSRP. The bass is hard-hitting, the mids are warm, and the treble is smooth, so this would be an ideal pair of headphones for pop, rap, and EDM enthusiasts, while it works well with a variety of genres.

5. BEYERDYNAMIC DT770 PRO

This is another iconic pair of headphones in the world of audiophiles. It may be utilized as a studio or gaming workhorse headphone and delivers a good value. Obviously, I am referring to the 250-ohm variant, thus you will need an amp capable of driving them.

The DT 770 Pro is constructed with durable materials and superior craftsmanship.

As previously stated, these are studio headphones. They were created with professional musicians and audio production professionals in mind. Consequently, I select the 250ohm version since it more accurately and objectively represents the music. Very little coloring is present, and the sound is neutral and detailed, although it may not be the best option for full pleasure. It is a headset designed to complete a certain duty, and it does it admirably.

6. FOCAL CELESTEE

 6. FOCAL CELESTEE

I believe that focal’s headphones are inconsistent. Perhaps they have oversaturated the market with products in recent years. However, when they do something right, they get it right. I currently rank the Focal Utopia as the greatest all-around audiophile headphone on the market, and the new Celeste makes a strong argument for this ranking in the closed-back headphone category.

As can be seen in the image, this is a stunning-looking pair of headphones. There is nothing on the market that resembles it. The sleek design, exquisite materials, and subtle accents all over them are surely eye-catching. If you wear these in public, you should anticipate inquiries regarding them.

Sonically, they are acceptable. I won’t lie, there are better headphones on this list if sound quality is the primary concern, but as a bundle, these hold their own. If you’re looking for headphones that block out noise, sound great, and have a deep bass, these are worth a look.

7. Close-Back Planar Headphones from Audeze

Oh, look it’s Audeze again. Don’t be so astonished, but these headphones sound genuinely incredible. The headphones have been improved throughout the years and are now available at an affordable price.

LCD-XC incorporates the brand’s LCD-X open-back planars into a non-vented ear-cup (with a dash of magic sauce) and provides some of the highest sound quality available in a closed-back headphone.

These headphones are to be experienced by serious music enthusiasts due to their eye-catching polished wood and oozing high-quality leather.

They require a strong amp to come to life and are among the most expensive headphones in the world, but if you are wanting to spend approximately $2,000 on a pair of closed-back headphones, we can think of a lot worse ways to spend that money.

8. DAN CLARK AUDIO STEALTH

 8. DAN CLARK AUDIO STEALTH

Dan Clark is a major player in the headphone industry and sells headphones at a variety of price points, but the stealth is one of the brand’s truly exceptional goods.

Designed as a pure audiophile-grade reference headset, its audio dissection is visceral. It is one of the most ruthlessly exposing headphones I’ve ever heard, therefore you’ll need a decent source and your files must be flawless.

They will showcase your music in a way you have likely never heard it before, bringing to light every nuance, positive and negative, in it.

The Stealth is an experience that should not be missed, and it is one of the headphones that can genuinely compete with the most expensive open-back headphones.

Oh, and did I not mention that it was also beautiful? The carbon ear cups are both visually and tactilely remarkable. A true beast in construction, design, and sound.

A magnificent design that adheres to the aesthetic principles of the widely respected Aeon. Advanced planar drivers produce exceptional sound. Ultra-luxurious padding and the option to change the fit with the leather headband provide comfort.

9. MONOPRICE 108324 Headphones

We did not want to exclude budget-friendly headphones from this list. Despite their terrible moniker, the Monoprice 108324 headphones are exceptional performers for $25.

You will sacrifice some sound quality, design, and construction compared to some of the more extravagant headphones listed above, but you will save hundreds or perhaps thousands of dollars.

All while receiving a pair of headphones that outperforms the vast majority of headphones in the sub-$100 price bracket. A fantastic buy that is well worth purchasing as a backup, beater, or for modding projects.

10. ATH-M50x Audio Technica Studio Headphones

You didn’t think we’d go through a list of the finest closed-back headphones without mentioning the insanely popular Audio-Technica M50x, did you?

In recent years, the M50x has been one of the most widely recommended headphones under $200, and for good reason.

There is a rich and well-balanced sound, superb build quality that makes headphones like Beats appear pitifully insufficient, detachable cords, and exceptional isolation.

11. CAMPFIRE AUDIO CASCADE

The most current review on this list arrives in first place. The Campfire Audio Cascade is an exceptional headset and one of the most refined and well-rounded products currently available on the market.

The Cascade is Campfire Audio’s first step into the world of full-size headphones, and it’s a knockout. Here you may read the complete Campfire Audio Cascade review.

Conclusion

Closed headphones are more suitable for use in noisy areas due to their capacity to block out external noise, thereby isolating the user in peace and quiet. Additionally, they prevent you from sharing what you are listening to with others nearby.

Most people think that they are better suited as a pair of travel headphones, with the majority of designers and manufacturers that target audiophiles on the go opting for a closed design. As a result, there are a variety of compact, robust, and well-made designs that make them easier to use on the go.

So, what are our current top 10 recommendations for closed-back headphones? In no particular order, the following headphones will be discussed.

One of the major advantages of closed-back headphones is their ability to block out unwanted sounds. What if, though, you desired to take that to the next level? Noise-canceling headphones are the logical solution. Sony’s superb WH-1000XM4 is simply the best option on the market this year if that is the path you wish to pursue.

It’s not a one-trick pony, though, since the well-liked XM4 produces a wonderful sound with detailed clarity and controlled bass. It boasts some of the most powerful additional software features of any headphones when it comes to its technological capabilities. Within the Sony app for Android and IOS, you may modify a variety of features, such as ambient sound intensity, spatial sound settings, and ANC strength.

Obviously, these are wireless headphones with a fantastic battery life and a quick charge so you can keep listening. It was an easy decision to add the WH1000-XM4 on this list because they are comfortable, sturdy, and quite attractive.
