16 Best Noise Cancelling Headphones In 2022

  • by

This article has a list of the top 15 noise-canceling headphones on the market in 2022 and a guide for how to choose the best one. We offer a variety of useful features and options to fit every budget.

What are the best noise-canceling headphones? is one of the most common questions we get. The answer is never clear, just like it is in all of our other buyer guides. A lot of what makes the best headphones depends on your budget, how they look, and what they can do. It makes it hard to pick just one to recommend.

This list has been updated for Winter 2022 to include more great-sounding ANC headphones that have come out in the last year. Many of these models were also in last year’s buyer’s guide because they are still good choices and their prices have gone down a lot. We only change them if a model has been updated or if a much better pair of headphones has come out and taken their place.

If you came here to find out which headphones and earbuds are the best this year, we hope this list helps. But if you want to know more about how we feel about a certain set or how they compare to each other in real life, don’t be afraid to leave us a comment. We’ll get back to you as soon as possible with a personalized suggestion.

If you want noise-cancelling headphones, you can look at our list of the best noise-cancelling earbuds, which goes into more detail on the subject.

List of the 16 Best Noise Cancelling Headphones in 2022

16. BEST NOISE-CANCELLING HEADPHONES

 16. BEST NOISE-CANCELLING HEADPHONES OF 2022

  Get it now on Amazon.com

Pros:

  • Best ability to block out noise you can buy
  • Excellent app support with many ways to customize it
  • ANC headphones with the best sound quality
  • The best performance by the ANC

Cons:

  • Expensive
  • The headband doesn’t fold up.

You can now buy the brand-new Sony WH-1000XM5, and you can read our full, in-depth review at the link below. The short version is that Sony took what they learned from the very popular WH-1000XM4 and made improvements in many key areas.

The XM5 has a new design that is more streamlined and uses better materials to keep things up to date and make it more reliable. On the inside, there are new drivers for better sound quality, more microphones for better ANC, and a new quick charge feature.

Using a Power Delivery-approved charger, the WH-1000XM5 cannot play music for 3 hours after only 3 minutes of charging. This might not seem like a big deal, but if you travel a lot, this is a great way to get more use out of your headphones’ batteries, and it was fun to use while I was reviewing them.

We tested the XM5 against the Bose 700 and Apple’s Airpods Max, which are two of its main rivals, but nothing came close. This was especially clear in how much background noise Sony was able to get rid of. We thought the XM5 were the best at blocking out noise, but the Bose were better for comfort and the Airpods were better for listening to music and other sounds around you.

Taking into account price, features, and performance, the WH-1000XM5 is the best headphone we’ve seen so far this year, not just the best ANC headphone. It works well.

15. SONY WH-1000XM4 – BEST VALUE SONY ANC HEADPHONE

 15. SONY WH-1000XM4 - BEST VALUE SONY ANC HEADPHONE

  Get it now on Amazon.com

Pros:

  • Only the new top-of-the-line Sony XM5 headphones do a better job of noise cancellation.
  • Excellent app support with many ways to customize it
  • The sound is full and detailed and works with many different types of music.
  • They look wonderful.

Cons:

  • None. At their new low price, they are the best ANC headphones on the market right now.

The new top model is the XM4, and Sony has once again shown why they are the best in this field. The noise-cancelling has improved and is now better than ever, but users still have a lot of freedom to adjust it to their own tastes from within the app.

Since the XM2, the sound quality has been great, but it’s even better now with less distorted lows and a very clear midrange. As always, a Sony doesn’t have that hollow feeling that many cheaper brands have.

The quality of the build has gone up a notch, and a new metal piece in the headband makes it stiffer. Sony has finally made the XM4 thinner and lower profile than ever, and they look as good as they sound.

The only bad thing about them is that they are expensive, but if you use ANC headphones a lot, there are currently no better ones on the market.

14. BOSE 700 ANC HEADPHONES – THE BEST BOSE HEADPHONES

 14. BOSE 700 ANC HEADPHONES - THE BEST BOSE HEADPHONES

  Get it now on Amazon.com

Pros:

  • The ones on our list that are the most comfortable
  • Amazing noise canceling
  • Looks that are top-notch

Cons:

  • Sony is often more expensive.

Bose dominated the market for a long time, and their noise-canceling headphones were by far the most popular ones ever. Their QC35 could be seen in every airport in the world, and when it came out, it was a big deal. The problem was that Bose made such good headphones that they kind of sat back and let other companies catch up and pass them while sales of the QC were still good. By 2019, things began to change, and Sony began to take a big chunk of its market share. It was time, so Bose came out with a new top-of-the-line model called the 700.

The Bose 700 series is a whole new set of headphones. A complete and thorough makeover of a line of headphones that was getting old and boring. People were surprised by the sharp new round headband and futuristic lines, but the more I see them, the more I like them.

Along with the style changes, Bose made their best noise-cancelling technology to date, which did well in all of our tests. They made the headphones better at isolating the wearer from outside noise and cut down on the amount of noise they let in.

The Bose really stands out because of how well it fits and how comfortable it is. These headphones are among the most comfortable I’ve ever worn. They are light, have just the right amount of padding, and have the right amount of clamping force.

It’s hard to choose between the Bose 700 and the Sony WH-1000XM3. Both of these headphones are the best in their class, so if you have to choose between them, it really comes down to how much they cost and how they look. Both will cut down on unwanted noise as well as anything else on this list, and both are recommended in the premium categories.

13. SONY WH-1000XM3 – PREMIUM NOISE-CANCELING HEADPHONES

 13. SONY WH-1000XM3 - PREMIUM NOISE-CANCELING HEADPHONES

  Get it now on Amazon.com

Pros:

  • best noise cancellation in its class
  • Excellent sound quality
  • There are a lot of features and functions.

Cons:

  • Expensive
  • The WH-1000XM4 took its place.

We finally put out our long and detailed review of the Sony WH-1000XM3 noise-canceling headphones after testing them for months. It would be an understatement to say that I was impressed, and the Sony WH-1000XM3 has quickly become my favorite noise-canceling headphone ever.

This is the headphone I use more than any other. It’s so good in every way that it’s hard to find fault with it, especially since it’s usually much cheaper than the Bose 700, which is its closest competitor.

It has a great battery life that will last for days even with the ANC turned on. It can also be charged quickly in just 10 minutes, which is great for people who travel a lot and don’t have much time between flights.

The sound is very good, and you don’t get that “sucked out” feeling that you do with other noise-canceling headphones. The mids are very clear and smooth, and the bass is tight and punchy. They don’t sound like ANC headphones at all, and so far, they’re the best-sounding option.

The design has been improved, and the headband doesn’t seem to break as often as it did on the first model. They can be folded up and come with a carrying case so they can be kept safe when not in use.

The improvements to the way it looks are also very welcome, and now the XM3 has a classy but understated look that makes it easy to recognize. Before, they looked and felt a little cheap, but now we can put these in the “premium consumer” category and be happy about it.

Last but not least, the XM3 has more useful features than any other headphone on the market in 2022. There is an app that lets you change the sound quality, the level of noise cancellation, and a lot more.

If you can afford them, these headphones are a no-brainer, and we ranked them the best overall headphones of 2022.

12. BOSE QUIET COMFORT 45: COMFORT AND QUIET

 12. BOSE QUIET COMFORT 45: COMFORT AND QUIET

  Get it now on Amazon.com

Pros:

  • New Bose flagship headphones that block out noise
  • Extremely Relaxing
  • Siri and Google Voice are compatible

Cons:

  • A little dull in design.

The Bose QC35II were the best noise-canceling headphones on the market until the Sony WH-1000M2 came out. Even though I think Sony’s XM4 is slightly better in terms of performance, Bose’s new Quietcomfort 45 model shows that it is still the best when it comes to comfort.

These are a huge improvement over the old Bose QC35. They sound much better and have one of the best ANC systems on the market. The new version is almost the same as the original 35s, but it has a built-in button for Google or Siri.

They are one of the lightest and most comfortable headphones on this list, and the battery life is good. The warranty and customer service are also great.

11. BOWER & WILKINS PX7 HEADPHONES – STYLE AND CLASS

 11. BOWER & WILKINS PX7 HEADPHONES - STYLE AND CLASS

  Get it now on Amazon.com

Pros:

  • Gorgeous Design
  • Excellent Quality of Build
  • Sound quality that matches the class

Cons:

  • Very good ANC performance, but Sony and Bose are still miles ahead.
  • Expensive

Bower and Wilkins is best known for their high-end speaker line, but when they came out with noise-canceling headphones in 2018, they really gave Sony and Bose a run for their money.

If I had to pick the best-looking pair of headphones on this list, it would be these. Even though they are full-size headphones, they look much better on the head than you might think because of how close they sit to the head and how the headband curves. They can also be bought in two different colors.

Outstanding design and build quality are combined with top-of-the-line class and noise-canceling skills to try to compete with the big 2. Even though the price puts most people off, this is a great pair of headphones. I would call the PX a luxury headphone because its quality and finish are better than those of the Bose and Sony, even though it doesn’t perform quite as well.

10. SENNHEISER PCX 550 – SOLID ALL ROUNDERS

 10. SENNHEISER PCX 550 - SOLID ALL ROUNDERS

  Get it now on Amazon.com

Sennheiser is well-known in the world of headphones, so it’s no surprise that they have a few noise-canceling headphones at different price points. The PCX 550 are the company’s best noise-canceling headphones for travel. They can’t compete with the three big brands above, but they are a great value for the money.

The PCX 550 has a good build quality and a lot of comfort features, just like most other Sennheiser headphones. In fact, these were some of the most comfortable headphones we tried, and while the ANC isn’t quite as good as the Bose and Sony models, they do a great job of blocking out background noise.

If I’m being honest, you should buy one of the other three models if you have the money, but if price is your main concern, these are the best models in the second tier.

9. POLY BACKBEAT PRO 2 – BEST BANG FOR BUCK

 9. POLY BACKBEAT PRO 2 - BEST BANG FOR BUCK

  Get it now on Amazon.com

Pros:

  • Surprisingly good job by the ANC
  • Less expensive than Bose or Sony
  • Look Good

Cons:

  • Not as good as the best.
  • Not sold in many electronics stores on the high street.

Plantronics (POLY) has a good name in the audio world because their headphone lines offer a lot of value for the money. They have a lot of experience with audio equipment and sell headsets to professionals and businesses. All signs point to their recent moves into the consumer headphone market being successful as well.

Not even the Backbeat Pro is different. If you want all the top-of-the-line features but don’t want to pay a fortune for them, these are definitely worth a look. They have a lot of options, like built-in assistants for Siri and Google, a control app that can be changed, and touch controllers.

Noise-cancelling is great, but it’s not the best in its class. Can block out most unwanted sounds, but has trouble with those that come less often. The earpads are as comfortable as the best, but we found them to be heavier than the best headphones from other companies.

For the price, they are a great deal because they sound great and are well made.

8. Best of the Rest (JABRA 85H)

 8. Best of the Rest (JABRA 85H)

  Get it now on Amazon.com

I think the Jabra 85has is the third best noise-canceling consumer flagship headphone on the market right now. The Jabra is a great pair of headphones if you want all the features of the Sony XM3 and Bose 700 but don’t mind a little less polish and are willing to pay about half the price at retail.

The completely modern design caught my eye right away, and even though the 85h is a bit bulky on the head, its great build quality and modern, sleek lines make it feel like a premium product. But their prices are the same as the mid-range ones on this list. Don’t get me wrong, they are definitely high-end.

I loved how well they blocked out noise, especially on flights, and I liked that they could adapt to their surroundings. This makes them great for using on public transportation or in the city.

The battery life is out of this world. I only had to pay one fare to fly from the UK to Vietnam, then to Hong Kong, and back to the UK. If I hadn’t made it, I was glad to hear that they have a fast charge feature that lets you use them for 5 hours after only 15 minutes of charging.

The 85h won our Bluetooth range test by about 1.4m more than the next best headphone, which is something you shouldn’t forget. With these headphones, you really don’t need to keep your phone close to get a good signal.

Last but not least, the Jabra headphones won the microphone test because the calls were much better on these headphones. But since Jabra has been making earpieces for a long time, we expected that from the start.

7. The Sennheiser Momentum 3 Wireless is an elegant choice

My vote for the best-looking set of noise-canceling headphones goes to the Sennheiser Momentum ANC Wireless.

If I didn’t already own a set of QC35 then I would be picking these up right away. They are built like tanks and have a real premium feel to them thanks to the compani’s use of metal and leather.

Sound as you would expect from a set of premium Sennheiser headphones is excellent.

6. AKG N60 NC – ONE FOR THE TRAVELLERS

 6. AKG N60 NC - ONE FOR THE TRAVELLERS

  Get it now on Amazon.com

If you are after a set of on-ear headphones and the Fiil Diva isn’t quite your cup of tea then I suggest the AKG N60.

AKG is like the Sennheiser of Asia and one of the most trusted and respected headphone brands in the world.

One of the best bang for buck headphones on this list they not only isolate well but they sound great with punchy deep bass and detailed mids.

These headphones won us over because they were well made and could be folded flat when not in use to make them easier to carry. A good choice if you don’t have much room.

5. REVIEW OF SHURE AONIC 50

 5. REVIEW OF SHURE AONIC 50

  Get it now on Amazon.com

Shure is one of the most well-known audio companies and has been in the business for many years. Their in-ear monitors have been very popular in the consumer market, but their full-size headphones have been ignored for a long time.

The Aonic 50 is Shure’s first attempt to break into a market where Bose and Sony are so strong. Even though it falls short, it’s a great start for someone new to the segment. The size of the headphones and the fact that they don’t fold up as small as Sony headphones were our main complaints. But it works well to block out noise, and the sound is great.

Sincere answer: I would only consider the Aonic 50 if the price was lower than the flagship models from Sony and Bose. One thing is certain: Shure will do very well if they can improve on this model for future products.

4. SONY WH-1000XM2 – STILL GREAT HEADPHONE AND CAN BE

 4. SONY WH-1000XM2 - STILL GREAT HEADPHONE AND CAN BE

  Get it now on Amazon.com

Pros:

  • Strong ANC, and the sound isn’t hollow.
  • battery tests went very well.
  • When not in use, they fold up, making them small and easy to carry.

Cons:

  • Uses a micro-usb to charge
  • Not as well-made as the Bose 700 or the WH-1000XM3.

The Bose QC35 were the most comfortable headphones, but Sony beat them in every other way, and it was this model that finally got Bose to make a new flagship. The WH-1000XM2 is Sony’s top-of-the-line noise-canceling headphone, but it has been replaced by the WH-1000XM3. But don’t rule them out just because they were ahead of their time. Other companies are still trying to catch up to them. The good news is that you can still find a lot of XM2s for sale for about half to two-thirds of what they were originally sold for.

The noise-cancelling is simply amazing, and I have to say that it’s better than the Bose QC35II. Also, for ANC headphones, the sound quality is insanely good. Then there are touch controls, noise that changes based on the environment, and a custom app. The battery lasts about 24 hours on a single charge, and of course, they can be charged quickly.

On the downside, they don’t perform as well as the latest generation of Sony and Bose headphones, but they do 90% of the job for a lot less money. Even though it’s not the top model right now, the XM2 might be the best buy in this area right now.

3. NURAPHONE

 3. NURAPHONE

  Get it now on Amazon.com

A headphone with an unusual design that works very well and sounds great. The Nuraphone is based on the idea that everyone hears things differently, so headphones should be able to be tuned to each person’s needs.

They come with an app that lets users change how the sound works. This gives the presentation a very cool effect and an unmatched sense of space.

The quality of construction was very good, but I don’t like that I can’t fold them up to take them with me. On the other hand, they are very light and comfortable to wear.

A strange choice, but this is a company that I’m excited to see in this market.

2. BANG & OLUFSEN BEOPLAY H8

 2. BANG & OLUFSEN BEOPLAY H8

  Get it now on Amazon.com

When we reviewed the B&O H9 earlier this year, we were very disappointed, but the same can’t be said about the great H8.

The build quality and materials of these headphones are excellent, and the sound quality is very good. The only thing keeping them from getting top marks is a touch control system that isn’t well put together.

The H8 headphones are a fashion and luxury item, so you pay a bit more for the name and build quality than you would for Sony or Bose headphones.

1. MONOPRICE SONICSOLACE

 1. MONOPRICE SONICSOLACE

  Get it now on Amazon.com

The SonicSolace are, by a long shot, the best noise-cancelling headphones for the money. I just don’t understand how a headphone that is so good and has so many features can cost so little.

The design is great because it looks like the Master and Dynamic line of high-end headphones, and the quality of the build was much better than I expected. Touch controls, Bluetooth, and ANC that actually works are all included. Surprisingly, it sounds only a few generations behind today’s best headphones, and even though it doesn’t change, it still blocks out a lot of outside noise.

If you don’t want to spend a lot of money on ANC or only need it when you travel, this is the perfect set that won’t break the bank but still has all the features you need.

WHAT ARE HEADPHONES THAT CUT OUT NOISE?

Noise-cancelling headphones are different from noise-isolating headphones because they use technology to try to cancel out unwanted outside noise. They use a series of chips, algorithms, and microphones to pick up the noise they don’t want and play a sound wave that cancels it out in real time.

Headphones that isolate sound are different. They try to lower the outside noise by blocking it with insulation. They use padding, a closed design, and a pressurized seal against the head to cut down on noise, but they don’t cancel it out completely.

Both types of headphones can be very good at reducing the decibels of loud sounds that reach your ears. Noise-canceling headphones are better than regular headphones when you have to deal with noises that last a long time and don’t stop, like airplane engines or a crowd. Because of this, they are one of the headphones that commuters and travelers look for the most.

Read this article about how noise-canceling headphones work if you want to learn more about the technology. If you just want to know which headphones are the best this year, keep reading below.

ANC HEADPHONES WORK BEST WHERE?

Contrary to what most people think, headphones with ANC do not cancel out all outside noise. They work to cut down on noise that is constant and predictable. This makes them great for flying because the algorithm can lock on to the constant hum of the engines and block out almost everything else. But if someone suddenly yells or drops something, you’ll probably hear it because the algorithm can catch up in time to make a sound wave that cancels out the sound.

Without a doubt, traveling is the best time to use ANC headphones. As we’ve already said, flying is one place where these headphones really shine. In fact, these headphones are a great addition if you want to take a train or bus, and they also do a great job of blocking out the noise of the city.

People also find ANC to be very useful at the office, where noisy coworkers can be distracting but are easy to drown out.

DO EARPHONES THAT MUTE NOISE WORK WITHOUT MUSIC?

Some do, but it depends on the company that made them. Many brands turn off the headphones when there is no music signal coming in to save battery life. Before you buy, you should check to see if you can only use the headphones with noise-canceling.

DO NOISE CANCELLING HEADPHONES DAMAGE HEARING?

No, they don’t. In fact, they might be safer than regular headphones to use. The loudness of the music will be the biggest factor in whether headphones or speakers hurt your hearing.

People already listen to a lot of music that is way too loud. This is made worse when there is a lot of noise in the environment. If there is a lot of noise around you, your first instinct may be to turn up the volume to drown it out. ANC headphones block out that outside noise, so you’re less likely to turn up the volume to block it out.

DO ANC HEADPHONES BLOCK OUT VOICES?

If someone is right next to you and talking to you, you can probably still hear what they’re saying. It may sound a little muffled or warped, but you should be able to understand most of what is being said.

If you mean the voices of many people in a large room, hall, or office, then yes, they should be blocked out or at least quieted down.

The reason for this is that noise-canceling headphones are better at blocking out steady noise in certain frequency bands than they are at blocking out direct speech, which is more erratic. If someone is talking to you, the sounds aren’t as predictable, making it harder for the algorithm to tune them out.

When someone is trying to get your attention, this can be helpful. In the same way, you might not hear the rumble of traffic in a busy city, but you would hear a horn.

DO I NEED HEADPHONES THAT CUT OUT NOISE?

This is by far the most frequent question we get about this technology. How and where you listen to music is the only way to find out. If you’re going to be somewhere where there’s a lot of outside noise. Noise-canceling headphones are very helpful in busy places like cities, offices, airplanes, airports, cafes, and even libraries. At the end of the day, you will feel less tired and more at ease.

If you work or live in a place where there isn’t much background noise, you should get a good pair of headphones so you can listen to music.
